Why Choose Chipboard Floorboards for Your Project?
T&G chipboard flooring provides a versatile, reliable foundation for residential and commercial flooring systems. They are the standard timber sheet material for creating structural subfloors in modern UK homes, combining strength with affordability.
-
Cost-Effective: Chipboard is one of the most budget-friendly sheet materials available, offering a strong, durable flooring option without compromising on quality.
-
Durable Construction: Engineered from compressed wood chips bound with synthetic resin under high-density compression, these panels deliver excellent load-bearing capacity for everyday use.
-
Easy Installation: The tongue-and-groove design allows for easy installation and tight joints, which help mitigate movement and noise between boards.
-
Moisture-Resistant: P5-grade chipboard retains most of its original strength and structure when exposed to intermittent rain or water, making it suitable for humid interiors, including kitchens and living rooms.
Professional supply from Timbertraders ensures your chipboard sheets meet structural-grade flooring board standards, arrive at the correct moisture content, and feature consistent tongue-and-groove joint profiles for seamless fitting.

Available Chipboard Floorboard Specifications
-
18mm Thickness: Ideal for standard domestic flooring with joist centres up to 400mm, perfect for most homeowners undertaking refurbishment projects or loft conversions.
-
22mm Thickness: Heavy-duty, structural-grade flooring board for longer spans of up to 600mm between joists and for commercial applications requiring additional load-bearing capacity.
-
Standard Size: 8ft x 2ft (2400x600mm) panels provide efficient coverage at approximately 1.44m² per sheet, making quantity calculations straightforward for any project.
-
Tongue and Groove Design: All four edges feature interlocking profiles that create secure groove joints, reducing movement and providing a smooth, uniform floor surface ready for your chosen finish.
-
P5 Grade: Moisture-resistant chipboard designed for general flooring use, suitable for domestic applications and intermittently humid environments. Moisture-resistant chipboard is typically marked in green to indicate its moisture resistance, although it is not waterproof.

CHIPBOARD FLOORBOARDS FAQs

What joist spacing is suitable for 18mm chipboard floorboards?
The most common thicknesses for chipboard are 18mm and 22mm, with specific applications based on joist centres. For 18mm tongue and groove chipboard, the maximum recommended joist spacing is 400mm centres. If your floor joists are spaced further apart, you should select 22mm thickness to prevent deflection and ensure proper load bearing performance.
Can chipboard floorboards be used in bathrooms and kitchens?
P5 chipboard is a robust, moisture-resistant grade designed for general flooring use, suitable for domestic applications such as kitchens and living rooms. However, non-moisture-resistant standard chipboard (P2/P4) should not be used in kitchens or bathrooms to prevent swelling. For permanently wet areas or zones with direct water exposure, alternative substrates may be more appropriate.
What’s the difference between 18mm and 22mm chipboard floorboards?
The 22mm thickness provides greater stiffness and load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for joist spacing up to 600mm and for areas subject to heavy loads. The 18mm option works well for standard residential applications with joist centres up to 400mm. Both thicknesses provide a stable base when properly installed, though 22mm offers reduced flex and potentially quieter floors. It is worth noting that chipboard flooring does not hold screws as securely as hardwood plywood, making it easy to strip holes, and P5 chipboard can sag or bow under long-term heavy loads, making plywood preferable for high-load areas.
Before installation, it is important to store the chipboard flooring in the room where it will be fitted for at least 48 hours to allow it to acclimatise, reducing the risk of warping or shrinkage after installation. When laying tongue and groove chipboard flooring, apply adhesive to the joists and noggins, and secure the panels with screws at 150mm centres along the joists, ensuring no screws are closer than 10mm to the board’s edge. It is essential to leave at least a 10mm gap around the perimeter of the flooring to allow for expansion and prevent buckling.
How do I calculate how many boards I need for my project?
Each 2400x600mm panel covers approximately 1.44m². Divide your total floor area by 1.44 to determine the base quantity, then add 5-10% for cutting waste and offcuts. Ensure boards are laid so short edges fall on joists, and plan your layout in a staggered formation to distribute weight evenly across the joists.
